Fake Gustave (偽ギュスターヴ Nise Gyusutāvu?) is a character in SaGa Frontier 2.
The specific origins of Fake Gustave are unknown, though the SaGa Frontier 2 Complete Works artbook mentions that he hails from a country located in the Southern Continent (likely Na). Originally a quell hunter like Wil, the false Gustave sets off from his country in order to make a name for himself while becoming a renowned military figure in the process, until by things of fate he comes across a wounded man that claimed to be Gustave XIII's grandson who showed him an "ordinary anima stone" as proof which in turn is unawarely picked by Fake Gustave making him become part of an important ongoing conflict between an ancient sentient artifact and a family of quell hunters.
Profile[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Fake Gustave bears a striking resemblance to Gustave as seen specially in his official artwork, he used to have white hair until by the power of the Egg he changed it into a white-ish blonde color.
He wears a small blue shirt along with dark brown pants, a small cape, iron shoulder pads, gloves, boots and a belt attached to his waist that holds his Galatyn.
Personality[edit]
Fake Gustave is described as a man with high ambitions in the artbook though that is barely seen ingame as his personality is reverted to zero and ends supplanted by the one developed by the Egg.
Story[edit]
Fake Gustave is first seen in "1300 - Fake Gustave Arrives" in the Lordless Land where after what may have been some sort of skirmish against a group of bandits he is seen picking an "ordinary anima stone" (in reality being none other than the Egg) from a wounded man (likely the leader of the bandits) that claimed to be Gustave's grandson who showed him the "stone" as his proof, afterwards he goes to the Westia inn where he hears a conversation between the guests about the incident of the man claiming to be Gustave's grandson to which he asks them if he (now as the Egg) could declare himself "Gustave" which makes the guests laugh at him due the absurdity and weirdness of the question, a guest then says the less he could do to consider himself a "Gustave" would be having blonde hair which prompts the impostor to change his hair from white to blonde, surprising everyone. After that he asks about what else could he need in order to fully become "Gustave", which in response gets told to have a strong army and loyal subordinates, this leads to the impostor to depart from the inn to travel around Sandail in search of individuals with strong anima in order to start building his army of Edelritter to set in motion the final stage of the plan of resurrection of the Ancients.
During the scenario "1301 - Edelritter" he tracks down a person he suspects to be strong enough to become the first of his group of individuals with exceptionally strong anima, he finds Sargon, Watts and Gretta in a quarry site in the Lordless Land, who were on a quest to exterminate monsters that were infesting their home village, and begins to stalk them until he is noticed by Sargon who tells him of his quest which prompts Fake Gustave to offer his help but instead is rejected due to Watts and Greta not trusting him. he keeps stalking the group until they interact with the Unknown Megalith which causes their anima to overflow turning Watts and Greta into slimes due to their weak mind resistance, but empowering Sargon's to a limit far beyond than normal, confirming his suspicions, turning him into the first Edelritter - the Fire Lord. Afterwards Fake Gustave's next step in the Egg's plan after gathering the remaining 5 elemental lords (the Edelritter) is to start a war to gather enough anima to power the Star Megalith, to do so he and his army take over Hahn Nova (1305 - Battle of Hahn Nova) which in turn causes the regional lords opposing him to form a temporal alliance and form an army under the command of King David of Jade, thus beginning the legendary Battle of South Moundtop (1305 - Battle of South Moundtop), resulting in the "defeat" of Fake Gustave's forces by King David aided by the army of Laubholz.
Though defeated in the Battle of South Moundtop, Fake Gustave (the Egg) having achieved his goal of absorbing a massive amount of anima during the battle, now retreats to the Star Megalith hidden deep within the northern continent alongside his loyal Edelritter to start the final part of the plan of resurrecting the Ancients: use the Star Megalith to terraform the planet and replace the anima of the living creatures with that of the Ancients.
To his surprise, his hideout is found by Ginny and her party (1306 - The Last Megalith), who battle and destroy the 6 Edelritter while on their way to the Egg's chamber. The final decisive battle begins between Fake Gustave (now transformed into the Star Lord) and Ginny's party, culminating with his demise, the destruction of the Star Megalith and the Egg, at last liberating the world from the clutches of the Ancients and their atrocious plan of forced resurrection.
