Background and Story[edit]
An adventurer searching for treasure deep within Frosthold Fortress, Red Mage is able to use Necromancy and Sorcery; both of which are forbidden magic that cannot be used by anyone else. In the SNES original, he instead has the ability to use Dark and Evil magic, which are, in the same nature as the remake, unavailable to the player. Despite the remake's absence of what is called sorcery magic, said magic is one of the most available types in the original.
He is only recruitable, and playable, for the duration of Frosthold Fortress. Most of his equipment slots are locked and he will immediately disband if you attempt to leave the Fortress, making his true motives appear even more suspicious.

Trivia[edit]
- Upon leaving Frosthold Fortress it is revealed that Red Mage is in fact the Minion Spite in disguise.
- In the original Super Famicom release of the game, Red Mage had the same sprite as the Ghost from Final Fantasy VI. This is because the friendly ghost was a recycled and recolored Red Mage sprite.
- The Red Mage uses the overworld sprite of a very familiar face to players who have went further into the game.
- In the Ultimania story, "A Bard's Tale", Red Mage's identity is found out as soon as the party reaches the sword. The party was playing along since they saw through the disguise easily and Freilei kills Spite with the Obsidian Sword itself.
