This is a list of obtainable formations in Romancing SaGa 2. Most new formations can be obtained by speaking to the Drill Instructor in the Dojo with various Emperors/Empresses of different classes.

| Free For All | A line formation reminiscent of a brawl. This battle plan has no added benefits. | Available from the start |
| Imperial Cross | A formation used by the Varennes Empire. The vanguard defends against all attacks. | Available from the start |
| Rising Phoenix | A formation that leaves the Emperor out in the open, allowing the others to attack. | Tactician |
| Lightning Flash | A formation for continuous attacks. Order goes from front to back toward the Emperor. | Levante Guard |
| Desert Fox | An offensive formation where the Emperor takes the vanguard like the leader of a pack. | Desert Guard |
| Amazon Raid | An offensive formation that focuses on attack and speed with the Emperor in front. | Amazon |
| Hunter's Gambit | An offensive formation that allows the Emperor to use a bow safely from the back. | Hunter |
| Whirlwind | A balanced formation that enhances speed and divides damage amongst the vanguard. | Nomad |
| Divine Wall | A defensive formation where 3 in the vanguard form a wall, guarding the 2 in the back. | Crusader |
| Seer's Focus | A formation that boosts the Emperor's spell power while hampering his speed. | Diver |
| Rapid Stream | A formation that enables first strikes but lowers evasion through frenetic movement. | Armed Merchant |
| Mu Palisade | A strong defensive formation that counters attacks. Order goes from front to back. | Mu Clansman |
| Dragon Stance | A formation for continuous attacks. Order goes from Emperor straight to back. | Brawler |
| Free For All 2 | An improved Free for All. Allows the Emperor to attack from the back. | Vagabond |
| Goblin Offense | A goblin special! This wild formation boosts all fighters' attack and speed. | |
| Imperial Arrow | A variation of the Imperial Cross. The vanguard is quicker but more susceptible. | Imperial Guard |
| Yin & Yang | A formation that boosts all allies' speed using feng shui. | |
| Tactical Ranks | A 3-1-1 formation that changes the roles of each position according to the situation. |
