SaGa Emerald Beyond (サガ エメラルド ビヨンド SaGa Emerarudo Biyondo?), is the 12th console entry and latest standalone installment in the SaGa series. It was released in Japan on April 25, 2024, and globally on the same day for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, iOS, and Android. It is the first SaGa entry with series creator Akitoshi Kawazu credited as the game's director in 23 years since the release of UNLIMITED Saga in 2002.[5]
The game features five unique storylines starring six protagonists set across 17 interconnected worlds known as the Conjoined Worlds. In a new iteration of the series non-linear Free Scenario System, Emerald Beyond streamlines player choices with the Emerald Vision quest progression system and also introduces random variations on each of the 17 worlds' questlines based on player data carried over multiple playthroughs. As a result, according to Kawazu, SaGa Emerald Beyond features the most branching story variation out of any game in the series to date.[6]
Emerald Beyond returns the franchise to a science fantasy multiverse setting in the same vein as SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu and SaGa Frontier while also serving as a follow up to SaGa Scarlet Grace. The game expands on Scarlet Grace's Timeline Battle[7] system by introducing new mechanics such as a revised United Attack system, Showstoppers, and new tech conditionals such as Pursuits and Chains. In addition to Humans, the playable cast of races has also expanded to include series staples such as Monsters and Mechs, and adds new races original to Emerald Beyond, such as Kugutsu and Ephemerals, each with their own new growth mechanics.
Gameplay[edit]
When starting a new game, the player is given a choice between one of five story campaigns, each with their own main character(s), goals, and different lengths in playtime:
- Tsunanori Mido: Member of a branch of the famous Mido family of kugutsu puppetmasters. Mido's campaign requires the player to collect elemental spirits from four of the Conjoined Worlds. One of the shorter campaigns alongside Ameya's campaign, the ending you get depends on the quality of the spirits Mido collects and the number of playthroughs completed, encouraging players to replay the story multiple times for different results.
- Ameya Aisling: Daughter of the White Sage. Currently undertaking her Witchterms. Ameya's campaign has her collecting cats across the Conjoined Worlds in order to restore her magical powers, while also progressing her Witchterms by advancing storyline events in Miyako City. Like Mido's campaign, the structure of Ameya's campaign is designed around short individual playthroughs (the shortest out of all five storylines), with many potential choices and endings being unlocked only after completing multiple cycles of both Ameya and other characters' stories depending on the choices you make in Pulchra throughout all playthroughs.
- Bonnie Blair & Formina Franklyn: A levelheaded sharpshooter and fiery pugilist who serve as officers with the Capitol City Police Department. Bonnie and Formina's campaign brings the player through nine of the Conjoined Worlds as the two investigate leads on an assassination attempt against the President of Capitol City.
- Siugnas: An undying vampire lord. Has many thralls under his command.
- Diva No.5: The latest model in the Diva series of entertainment mechs. Diva No.5's campaign has her traveling through a maximum of ten of the Conjoined Worlds to reclaim her identity.
Each scenario has their own starting retinue that remains the same and can carry stats and abilities over multiple playthroughs. The pool of potential recruitable characters in each scenario changes depending on the selection of Worlds the player selects to progress the story, and what questline variations they are presented with. Some Worlds have multiple potential recruitable characters that are mutually exclusive depending on the outcome of events when completing the World's questline.
Races & Character Progression[edit]

Party members in Emerald Beyond can fall under one of the following races:
- Humanoid: Humanoids are a classification of most races that are able to use standard Weapon Techs. With the exception of Wastrels, all Humanoids are able to glimmer new Weapon Techs during battle on their own.
- Human (人間): Classification of Tsunanori, Bonnie and Formina, and many other weapon-wielding characters. In addition to glimmering standard Techs, Humans are able to glimmer Custom Techs, modified versions of the Weapon Techs they have already learned.
- Witch: Classification of Ameya and the witches of Witchdom Pulchra. While highlighted as their own category in the Emerald Beyond Tips' entry on Humans, aside from Ameya's character-specific cat collecting growth system, Witches functionally work the same gameplay-wise as Humans.
- Squire: Classification of Shinobu Kato and characters serving under the witches of Witchdom Pulchra. Squires are nearly identical to other Human characters, with the only limitation being the inability to learn or equip Spells.
- Vampire (吸血鬼): Classification of Siugnas. The sole Vampire in the game, Siugnas is able to drain Life Points/LP from other Humanoid characters to transform them into Thralls in order to learn special Blood Techs. He is also able to equip Sanguine Gear and Sanguine Roles.
- Thrall: Humanoids that have had their LP drained by Siugnas. Upon becoming a Thrall, the character loses 1 maximum LP and has the ability to be promoted to a Knight using Sanguine Gear, retaining any racial traits they originally had.
- Knight: Thralls who are knighted by Siugnas equipping them with Sanguine Gear. Upon becoming a Knight, the character gains 3 maximum LP and is able to use Sanguine Roles and Blood Techs like Vampires. In exchange, Knights lose their original racial traits and are forcibly demoted to Wastrels should they remove their Sanguine Gear.
- Wastrel: Former Knights stripped of their Sanguine Gear. Wastrels permanently have their maximum LP reduced to 1 and lose the ability to glimmer new Techs or learn new Spells. Functionally, as Wastrels have zero benefit over other characters, Wastrels serve as a risk the player must weigh when choosing which Sanguine Gear to use and which Thrall to equip when deciding to create a Knight.
- Human (人間): Classification of Tsunanori, Bonnie and Formina, and many other weapon-wielding characters. In addition to glimmering standard Techs, Humans are able to glimmer Custom Techs, modified versions of the Weapon Techs they have already learned.
- Monster (モンスター): Classification of cat party members such as LoLo, Meow, Purr, Hiss, and other recruitable creatures. Unlike most SaGa games featuring Monsters, rather than transformation mechanics, Monsters in Emerald Beyond function somewhere between the Monsters and Mystics from SaGa Frontier in that Monsters can learn new Techs from enemies by absorbing their essence upon defeating them as long as they have available Tech slots on their equipment. Monsters have Techs specific to each unique character and set equipment that can never be removed.
- Mech (メカ): Classification of Diva No.5 and other mechanical party members. Mechs gain HP, Attributes and exclusive Mech Techs from equipping gear. In addition, Mechs are able to equip Relic Gear to make use of Monster Techs.
- Kugutsu (クグツ): Classification of Musashi, Sukune, Komachi, and Boh. While Kugutsu are unable to equip more than one weapon or glimmer Techs on their own, they have a chance of Mimicking a Tech from another character in battle who is using the same weapon as them, learning them permanently. Kugutsu can Mimic any Tech from both other party members and enemy weapon users (with the exception of Human-exclusive Custom Techs) as a way to quickly advance their Tech lists without needing to rely on the infrequency of glimmers. If using Kugutsu during Tsunanori's campaign, they are also able to equip and change Soul Roles acquired from enemies, granting additional passive bonuses and exclusive Techs & Spells.
In addition, some party members belong to special racial categories or have special properties alongside their innate race:
- Ephemeral (短命種): Classification of Bláth and other unique party members. Ephemerals have comparatively less total LP than any other race in the game, starting with 3-4 max LP on recruit. Ephemeral party members will gradually grow and age over the course of many battles, changing their Ephemeral Role in a four-stage process: juvenile, young, mature, and elder. For each change, their maximum LP will decrease by 1 until becoming an elder at 1 maximum LP. Unlike other characters, when an Ephemeral reaches 0 LP, they will reincarnate immediately after the battle in which they were defeated, resetting their Ephemeral Role to juvenile, increasing several stats and teaching unique Inherited Techs. Rather than being its own exclusive race, Ephemerals are a category that can overlap with others, namely Humanoids and Monsters, and thus operate on the same Tech learning systems as said races.
- Relic-Bearers: Classification of Wednesday and characters who can equip Relic Gear. While not formally a race of its own, characters who are able to equip Relic Gear gain access to Monsters' Unleash and Absorb Techs and are able to learn Monster Techs in the same way in addition to their original racial traits.
Character Attributes & Weapon Skills[edit]
- Main article: Stats in SaGa Emerald Beyond
Unlike previous SaGa games that had either character attribute growth (i.e. SaGa 1-3, Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier) or weapon skill level growth (i.e. Romancing SaGa 2-3, SaGa Frontier 2, SaGa Scarlet Grace), Emerald Beyond features both attribute growth and weapon skill growth.
Timeline Battles[edit]

- Main article: Timeline Battle #SaGa Emerald Beyond
SaGa Emerald Beyond uses a round-based timeline positioning battle system building off the system developed in SaGa Scarlet Grace. Many of the new mechanics added, such as Showstoppers and Overdrive, were developed to make battles more exciting in response to developer feedback from Scarlet Grace's battle system, namely the limitations of United Attacks' need for multiple allies & enemies and the predictability of combat overall.[8]
During battle, characters have a number of different ways to learn new Techs. In the case of Glimmering and Mimicking, the new Tech will be used after the character's selected action without replacing the Tech being originally used, similar to Scarlet Grace's Glimmer mechanics. If the new Tech was learned during a United Attack or Showstopper, the new Tech will be counted as part of the attack chain and use the Combo Rate generated by previous attacks.
- Glimmering: Available to most Humanoids.
- Mimicking: Available to Kugutsu.
- Unleash & Absorb: Available to Monsters and any ally equipped with Relic Gear.
Formations[edit]
- Main article: Formations (SaGa Emerald Beyond)
The Formation system in Emerald Beyond resembles the one found in SaGa Scarlet Grace. Different Formations will give allies in specific positions beneficial effects and alters the party's BP management, such as starting/maximum BP and the conditions needed to increase BP over the course of battle.
Roles[edit]

Synopsis[edit]
SaGa Emerald Beyond unfolds across 17 worlds, each connected by the Beyond, an interdimensional space that serves as both a physical and metaphorical bridge. The narrative is driven by the impending threat of a Calamity—a disaster that threatens the very existence of these worlds. The six protagonists, each from a different world, are drawn into this crisis, their individual stories intertwining as they struggle to prevent the catastrophe.
Worlds[edit]
Each World contains a unique scenario or quest that the main character experiences before leaving to move on to another world. Visiting a world multiple times across playthroughs will result in changes to the scenario, such as new branches becoming available or a completely new story. This encourages players to experiment and experience new facets of the world on each playthrough.
