Avalon

From SaGa Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

Avalon is one of the worlds that players can explore in SaGa Emerald Beyond. It is a gloomy kingdom where a suspicious individual coerces the player in to gathering items for them. As the name suggests, it contains references to Arthurian myth and to Britain in general. It has no relation to the Avalon of Romancing SaGa 2. They are both simply referencing the same mythical place.

Scenario[edit]

The player is tasked by Guinevere to collect items of value. She will convert the items in to diamonds that will be delivered to the king. The player moves through the world's map in a method reminiscent of a board game. Travel tickets allow the player to move a specific number of spaces depending on the type of ticket, so the player much plan their route to ensure they land on beneficial spaces while avoiding ones that cause them to lose items. The description of the vision for each space will give the player a general idea of what's obtained there, however there are hidden conditions for many of them that can change the reward. For example, certain spaces will normally make the player lose an item, but if there are no items to be stoled then the event will instead give one. However, the diamond requirements to please the king are relatively easy to reach, so there is no need to have full knowledge of each space's nuances. On the spaces where items will either all be doubled or taken, it is possible to avoid a bad result by using the rewind button to try again.

The most important spaces to land on while progressing are those that are mentioned in the description for the vision closest to you. The ultimate goal is to collect all three treasures at these locations while also collecting enough diamonds to bring those three treasures to the king. If the player misses an important item, there is an option to retry the current course at the end, but not to return to a previous course. Retrying will remove all key items gained, as well as any party members gained, and will return the player to the start of the course. All other items found like equipment are not taken. If the Punch Club event was completed, it will not be reset and will be the version with a rematch of the champion, so it is not possible to gain the unique gun equipment a second time.

On the second visit, and each even numbered visit afterwards, your guide will instead be Detective Spear who directs the player to find four items and bring them to a graveyard in the third course. Reaching the graveyard requires the party to reach the hospital with LP full so that the staff do not take an item to heal the party. This can be accomplished either with First Aid/Repair roles on the party or by allowing the hospital staff to heal the party and then retrying the course to reach the hospital again.

The ultimate goal is to finish the three courses with enough diamonds to see the king personally and to bring the special items required by your guide. The diamond requirement is not high and is reachable even with avoiding hard fights. Defeating the boss there will result in your guide joining you. In the case of Detective Spear, the dialogue option just before he joins will allow the player to change his appearance.

Bonnie and Formina[edit]

Bonnie and Formina have a unique version of the world. They will always arrive at this world first (not counting their start in Great Tree). They will obtain two party members there out of four characters. The first recruit is typically Minstrel (Mech), but will instead be Diva No.5 if her scenario was previously completed. The ritgram event later in the course can either be completed or abandoned by quitting. Completing it will lead the player to Guinevere while failing it will give Detective Spear

Notable Rewards[edit]

  • On odd numbered runs, there is a space where Minstrel (Mech) will tell a story of the Ice Sword (2H Sword) and the player will enter a difficult fight with a dragon that gives the Ice Sword when defeated.
  • On even numbered runs, the story will instead be about Lancelot and the dragon will give the Gae Bolg (2H Polearm) when defeated.
  • Winning all three Punch Club fights will give the Magellania (1H Gun)
  • If Battle Rank is high enough, the final enemy in the archaeology event is a giant lizard that can drop an Obsidian Sword (2H Sword). However, the drop is not guaranteed. This enemy can also appear in Providence (though not on all visits), and that is usually a better place to try to find this item since that one does not require fighting two other battles before the boss.
  • The sword found at the cemetery at the end of even numbered runs can be upgraded once the quest is completed in to the Excalibur (2H Sword)
  • Minstrel (Mech) can be recruited by listening to poems. Certain board layouts require a second visit after defeating the dragon.
  • Guinevere or Detective Spear can be recruited by succeeding in the scenario, depending on which of them is your guide.

Trivia[edit]

  • Capt. Silver can be found in the first fight of the Punch Club event. She can also be found in Brighthome. The character originally appears in Romancing SaGa
  • A Minstrel appears in many SaGa games, and Minstrel (Mech) continues the trend.
  • The poem "Galahad and The Ice Sword" is a reference to a well-known quest in Romancing SaGa.
