United Attack

United Attacks (連携), previously localized as Combination Attacks or Combos, is a recurring battle mechanic in the SaGa series introduced in SaGa Frontier.

Overview[edit]

A United Attack is a special technique that can be performed in battle using two or more party members. In most iterations, this involves allies using known Techs & Spells in rapid succession, forming a chain of attacks with increased power. United Attacks are given a name generated from the names of individual Techs & Spells used in order. In newer localizations and in all Japanese versions of the games, this name is made up of spliced segments of the Tech/Spell names added together into one long string, whereas in older localizations the combo name is simply the unaltered names of each Tech/Spell listed in order.

Combo Rate[edit]

In most games where United Attacks appear, the increased effect of United Attacks are represented on screen as a Combo Rate percentage that goes up as each attack lands on the enemies.

SaGa Scarlet Grace[edit]

Main article: United Attack (SaGa Scarlet Grace)

Despite sharing the same English name as combination attacks in later entries in the series, the United Attacks in SaGa Scarlet Grace operate completely different than other games in the series, being referred to as 連撃 (roughly translating as 'continuous/multiple attacks') in Japanese as opposed to the series standard 連携 (roughly translating as 'cooperation').

SaGa Emerald Beyond[edit]

Each tech has its own combo range. When these ranges meet on the timeline, the attacks join together to great effect. This is called a "United Attack"!

Main article: Overdrive (Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven)

In Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, because allies now immediately use their selected actions when selected each turn, thus disallowing multiple allies to select actions in advance, United Attacks have been redesigned to accommodate this turn system while also tying it to the new Overdrive meter mechanic.

Development[edit]

Hiroshi Takai, art director for SaGa Frontier.

The concept of United Attacks was first conceived by Hiroshi Takai during the development of SaGa Frontier as a result of his personal interest in action and fighting games. While the concept of combination attacks had been explored previously in another Square production, Chrono Trigger, systems designer Kyoji Koizumi decided against using a similar system. The team instead opted for an emergent combo system based on the player's available techniques, rather than having combos with predetermined outcomes. [1]
