The Firebrand Tragedy (1250) is the # 16th scenario of Gustave XIII in SaGa Frontier 2.

"The Firebrand is the symbol of power for the Finney Kingdom. However, it calls forth tragedy."

Objective[edit]

As Gustave spends most of his time in Hahn Nova, his new capital city, Philippe takes over the regency of Thermes. However, the citizens are adamant that he complete the traditional Firebrand Ceremony before they accept him as the new ruler. As the people yearn for a king to rule and protect them, Philippe undergoes the ceremony, despite it being increasingly hazardous for adults.

Philippe in engulfed in the flames of the sword and suffers severe burns. Thus he too has failed the Firebrand Ceremony and no amount of consolation from Gustave or Marie can help. Gustave suggests to his brother that his son, Philippe II, should take the test when he comes of age.

5 years later, the day dawns as everybody watches Philippe II attempt the Firebrand Ceremony. He effortlessly sets the Firebrand ablaze, thus becoming King when he old enough. In the meantime, his father will rule as Prince Regent. As the ceremony draws to an end an assassin rushes the stage and kills the young King. Enraged, Philippe reachs for the sword for the 2nd time in his life and kills the assassin. He is instantly engulfed in flames once more. As the chaos and flames die down the Prince Regent is transformed into a red dragon, who lifts up his lifeless son and flies away...
