Spells and abilities are special powers that Espers can learn through the experience of battle. They come in a wide range of classes such as healing, offense and support. Depending on which abilities they learn, an Esper can either be a force to be reckoned with or a liability, so it is important to know what their abilities are and have them retain the right abilities. Monsters are also capable of using many of the abiltiies listed, but they cannot learn new abilities unless they change their class. All Robots come with the Null Poison/Paralysis ability and it is unique to their class.

Espers can learn up to four abilities. Once they have four abilities, the one that is placed the lowest on their skill list can randomly be replaced with a new skill. Switching around skills is the best way to learn all of the skills needed. Espers have a chance to learn an ability once per battle in lieu of gaining a stat increase. What ability they learn is determined by which enemies they fight. All monsters have a hidden level that ranges from 1 to 10. Abilities are also ranked in this fashion. So the only skills available for an Esper to learn will be based on the level of the monster being checked against the ability list with the corresponding number.

: Example:
: Example:
:: ''Jugaur is defeated by an Esper, the game will check to see if the Esper will gain a stat. If the algorithm fails, it will then check to see if they will gain an ability instead. The game checks to see that the enemy has a hidden level of 1, it then cross checks this with a table of abilities available. The Esper learns Cure since it it also a Level 1 ability.''
::
:: ''Later, the Esper defeats the boss Ashura. His level is 7. If the Esper were to learn an ability, it would be cross checked against the ability table, but in this case, the ability can be anything from Level 1 abilities like Cure up to Level 7 abilities like Resist Physical. This means that while higher level monsters can teach much more powerful abilities, it may become much more difficult to gain the one wanted''

Espers can also learn weaknesses like Weak to Fire as a support skill. They can still be removed by placing them at the bottom of their skill list and having the Esper learn a new ability. Espers can also learn multples of the same ability, so they can have three different sets of Cure spells if the player chooses.
