Ewei is a mage that resides on the Isle of Evil who is in possession of the [[Fatestones|Emerald of Evil]]. 50 years before the events of the game he captured a ship of passengers and used them in an experiment. He does succeed in giving his subjects eternal youth but at the cost of putting them in a deep irreversible slumber. One of his subjects escaped and returned to the mainland, Ewei was humoured at the aspect that one was able to escape and he placed a spell on him to act as a key to navigate the storm around the Isle of Evil. In the western release of [[Romancing SaGa]] , he just cast a spell to disperse the storm which still remains. He infused himself with the cells of monsters to slow his aging so that he can continue his experiments unfettered.

Once located in the Isle of Evil, the subjects are found to be asleep, to the dismay of the old man who wished to locate them. Ewei afterwards states the irony of his experiments, having the men live forever while never truly living out life normally. At some point, the player is given three options, though in the SNES original all of these result in Ewei escaping with the emerald and with the subjects remaining asleep. This is due to space limitations making the addition of a fight against Ewei impossible, aswell as the emerald fatestone as an equippable item. In the WSC version, while Ewei cannot be fought (?), his subjects can be awaken and freed, acting as a more positive conclusion to the quest. In Minstrel Song, he can actually be fought for the Emerald, concluding the quest in a bittersweet fashion, as the subjects still remain asleep with no chance to free them.
